Almost from birth, Tallchief was involved in dance, starting formal lessons at age three. When she was eight, her family relocated from her birth home of Fairfax, Oklahoma, to Los Angeles, California. The purpose of the move was to advance the careers of Maria and her younger sister, Marjorie. Both sisters became dance professionals and leading figures.
In August 2013, Sister went to St. Matthew Convent/School in Philadelphia where she served as a faithful IHM Sister and an excellent Vice Principal at St. Matthew Parish until her death on May 7, 2020. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.

Her parents, Howard and Elizabeth (Fahey) Kane, her brothers Elmer (Nell), Preston (Madeline), Walter (Charlotte), Edward (Margaret), Howard (Rita), and her sisters Jessie, Dolores (James), Eleanor (Joseph) predecease Sister Geraldine. Sister is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and her Congregation of IHM Sisters.

Reverend William Dean celebrated the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, January 23 at Camilla Hall. Reverend Joseph McGeown, a long-time friend of Sister Mary, delivered a beautiful, meaningful homily. Sister Mary has a very large family and in attendance were many, many family members, friends and beloved IHM Sisters. Sister is survived by her brothers Joseph (Joann), Francis, her sisters Catherine McManus, Roseanne Norris (Walter), Marguerite Teresa Gaffney (Joseph), Eileen Hill, her sister-in-law Doris and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
In addition to her loving congregation of IHM Sisters, she is survived by her sisters, Sister Marie Hubert, IHM, Ellen Pels (Robert), Loretta Vancho, Patricia Kealy, and her brother, John Kealy. She was predeceased by her parents Hubert and Catherine (Houston) Kealy and her brother, Rev. Hubert Kealy.

Family/Friend Visitation will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. with a Prayer Service to start at 12:00 P.M. in the Eckols Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rebeca Garza (Samaria Church, Santa Rosa, TX) officiating. Interment will follow in the Loma Alta Cemetery.
In the summer of 2010 she began to visit Samaria Church (Rev. Rebeca Garza) in Santa Rosa, TX. A bond like on other began with her late pastor Rev. Marilanda V. Torres and Rev. Rebeca Garza. Every time Grams would go to the Rio Grande Valley it was like home away from home. At Samaria she was one of the prayer warriors. She was very well respected by each church member. She was a member of over 11 years.
I have 3 sisters Gladys, Annie, Beannie, 4 brothers, Felix, Ed, Lee, Vestine. Some of which has gone to God before me. If I could wish God would let me either take care of his nursery or work in his garden.
We all know the three Brontë sisters: Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë, without doubt the greatest writing family of all time. Many also know of their brother Branwell, a wasted talent who after a failed loved affair killed himself with a cocktail of alcohol and opium. Less well known is that Charlotte also had two elder sisters: Maria (named after her mother who died when Charlotte was five) and Elizabeth. Maria especially was said to be a precocious child, but these two oldest Brontë children died of tuberculosis within six weeks of each other in 1825. They had caught it at the hellish Cowan Bridge school they attended, and where Charlotte was also a scholar. The memories of the place would haunt her forever, until she revealed them in her depiction of Lowood within Jane Eyre.

In the same way, when we were in Swat, the north of Pakistan, we realized the importance of pens and books when we saw the guns. The wise saying, "The pen is mightier than the sword." It is true. The extremists are afraid of books and pens. The power of education frightens them. They are afraid of women. The power of the voice of women frightens them. This is why they killed 14 innocent students in the recent attack in Quetta. And that is why they kill female teachers. That is why they are blasting schools every day because they were and they are afraid of change and equality that we will bring to our society. And I remember that there was a boy in our school who was asked by a journalist why are the Taliban against education?
